Before making any major changes to our Microsoft 365 environment, I want to create a complete backup of our OneDrive data on an external hard drive. I’ve seen too many cases where people rely entirely on cloud sync, only to realize later that files were accidentally deleted or overwritten during migration.
I’ve been researching backup utilities and found the MacSonik OneDrive Migration Tool. Besides cloud-to-cloud migration, it also lets you back up OneDrive data directly to a local drive or an external hard drive, which seems like a safer approach before moving everything. That way, even if something unexpected happens during migration, there’s still an offline copy available.
One thing I appreciate is that the software focuses on secure transfers with encryption and claims to maintain complete data integrity throughout the process. It also supports filtering data by a custom date range, so instead of downloading years of files, I can back up only the documents created or modified within a specific period. For testing purposes, there’s also a free version available, although I noticed it’s limited to downloading files smaller than 20 MB.
Another useful feature is the downloadable migration report, which should make it easier to confirm exactly which files were backed up successfully. From what I’ve read, the interface is simple enough that even non-technical users can navigate it without much difficulty.
