For someone living in a shared flat with friends, How HRA exemptions can be claimed?

Typically, rent agreements are made with all parties involved in case there are multiple ones. If only single party is part of rent contract, there are provisions in the contract that restrict any commercial activity including subletting parts of the property.

In case where the name of the employee is not on the contract, the employee can’t avail HRA benefit.

P.S. for rent over 1 lakh, rent agreements are mandatory, for amount lesser than that, rent slips are sufficient.
