Progressing in HR career, suggestions?


Many of my HR friends are working in small companies and are managing multiple roles in HR from recruitment, training, compensation, payroll, few generalists roles etc. These multiple roles have confused with choosing the right path.

What roles would you suggest to as specialists when will help in career?
Are there any courses that will benefit each roles to move from a small company to a bigger organization?
