The unwritten standards of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour followed in a workplace are the best indicators of culture in any organization. The other indicator is “how” the results are achieved and how much emphasis is given on this aspect of results while assessing performance of individuals. Work culture is also about the principles that guide a team when they have hit a deadlock in their day to day work. How these deadlocks are resolved, defines the culture of an organization.

What is a positive work culture in an organization?

Any culture that enables performance and engagement at individual, team and Business Group level is in my view a positive culture. For a newcomer/early in career individual, it is a guiding star to navigate a new workplace and feel welcomed, for a mid career executive, it is a focus on continuous learning and exposure to uncharted territory while being taken care of and for a senior executive, it is an environment which allows them to shoulder the highest possible responsibility and accountability in the organization. So, the positive culture varies by the experience bracket of the individual.

What are the characteristics of a positive work culture?

1. There is a consistent view of what it is. 2. It is reinforced and incentivized by various methods which could be financial or non financial. 3. Promotions are visibly mindful of the cultural fitment of the employee. 4. Big results which are achieved by running counter to the culture are not glorified yet small results achieved by displaying the cultural norms are celebrated. These are just some of the characteristics in my view.

What are the challenges of creating a positive work culture?

The biggest challenge is identifying it and articulating it in a relatable manner. In case you are operating in multiple geographies, the next challenge will be to make it universally acceptable.

What are the different ways to ensure a positive work environment?

Inculcating mutual respect - for the individual’s knowledge and experience, their world view, their life choices is the first step. The next step is to provide them an environment where they can speak their mind. The final step is to ensure that they are shown that their feedback matters. All of these elements are to be created within the context of the organizational goals and deliverables.
