Hi greythr team,
Thank you for organising the session.
What is the fundamental difference between wellness and wellbeing and how important it is for the HR professionals to understand this difference before developing the wellness program or framing employee wellness policies?
Wellness describes a healthy lifestyle beyond acute illness.
It refers to a state of physical health in which people have the ability and energy to do what they want to do in life, without chronic suffering. Although wellness means something different at every stage of life, it’s primarily supported through habits of eating, physical activity and quality sleep that lead to positive health outcomes.
Wellbeing is a holistic aspect that encompasses physical, social, economical and spiritual aspects. Wellness further describes health status. It allows health to be placed on a spectrum of one’s optimal level (wellness) to one’s maladaptive state (illness).
HR professionals when they frame a wellness program need to keep the holistic aspect of wellbeing in mind. When they focus on one aspect of health, they must also be concerned how it helps other dimensions of life.
Physical: ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows one to get through daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. Spiritual is the ability to establish peace and harmony in our lives
Intellectual-The intellectual dimension encourages creative, stimulating mental activities Emotional-emotional dimension recognises awareness and acceptance nd healthy expression of one’s feelings such as happiness, hope, love, joy, sadness, anger, fear, and/or stress.
Social ability to relate to and connect with other people in the world Environmental-is recognising the unstable state of the earth and the effects of daily habits on the physical environment. Occupational-Occupational development is related to attitudes about work
Interesting question. First of all, we need to understand the difference. Productivity and performance are related but different concepts, according to business leaders.Generally, productivity refers to the quantity of work while performance denotes the quality of work.
More than 90 per cent of business leaders say that promoting wellness can affect employee productivity and performance. Employers see a healthy workforce influencing morale, engagement and overall corporate performance. Employees feel performance is more important than productivity. Health is an investment in human capital or as part of the organization’s core business strategy. organizations need a broader value proposition for workplace health promotion and to consider how workforce health programs are positioned within an organization, and why.
After Covid 19 pandemic we have been hearing a lot on flexi working. It is false if we say that organisations didnt thought about it earlier but due to the traditional mindset they were not open. But this pandemic has forced managersto seriously thing.
In general, flexible hours help people balance the demands of their work and their personal lives more effectively. There is evidence that people who work flexibly report better wellbeing, and are more satisfied with the work. Some of the flexible work strategies that promote wellbeing are: remote working, autonomy in making decisions, makes employees more creative.
Yes, there are couple of strategies which org. can employ to promote mental health which is a key priority. Some of the suggestions are:
First of all train the managers to believe in its importance. If they dont prioritise then niether would his /her employees. So they need to walk the talk.
2)Increase employees’ options for where, when, and how they work. Dont have a traditional manufacturing set up mindset. Things have changed now.
Health policies need to be reexamined. Org. need to see if the health insurance vendors cover mental health in their policy.
Lastly, listen to what your employees need and use their feedback to evolve
First, companies need to define what good looks like.
Companies must clearly define the desired outcome and practice principles of change management to work step-by-step toward that goal, making continuous adjustments along the way Second, executives need to be accountable for results. The dialogue around mental health and wellbeing should take place at the board level Third, companies need to apply more rigour to their metrics. This can be done by continuously measuring improvement, uptake, awareness, and utilization across various mental health initiatives. Widely used pulse surveys.
I must say that collaboration and team work is key to health promotion. Not only it has social and psychological benefits, it also releases certain feel good hormones that are beneficial for one’s health.
Team work and collaboration leads to increased happinesss, less stress among employees, increased engagement and loyalty, thus for the org. the citizenship behaviors increases.
Burnout definitely impacts wellbeing. If an employee experiences burnout, it will impact his physical, social and psychological health. Physical health in the form of diabetes , which is very common these days, high blood pressure, eating disorder etc; Psychologically, he may suffer from anxiety , PTSD or depression that may also impact social health.
Org need to realise this and come up with some plans such as external coaching -counselling sessions, flexi work hrs, autonomy, initiate dialogue in a safe space and ofcourse mindfulness based therapies.
