Can husband pay rent to wife and claim HRA?

Hi Manjunath,

Husband can pay rent to wife and claim HRA if the house property is owned by the wife and if there is a rent agreement executed by them.

If the house is jointly owned by husband and wife, the rent has to paid to the extent of portion owned and rented out making it clear in the rent agreement.

The rent receipts to be provided for HRA claim.
