1] Extend the limit to lapse considering the pandemic.
2] Secondly every year employee should avail 50% of accumulated leave that help to live a better quality of life for employee and his/her family, this also reduce cost burden to small companies.
3] Thirdly, in some small companies leaves are also transferred to co-employees in case of urgent needs when he/she has no leave balance to meet some exigencies.

I think the best way forward is to simply simplify, clubbing all leave categories gives more flexibility to the employee & for the employer it also eases administration.

Everyone enjoys their time off given their personal priorities. While l don’t see it as a showstopper but if compared to organizations having low annual leave then it could definately serve as a retention.

It does in many ways. 1) This is one of the important threads to work-life balance. 2) Employee needs to meet his social obligation, family commitment and urgency in life without losing money on part of salary or seen as LWP in the eyes of manager as lesser commitment to job.

In our organisation, We do not provide encashment of leaves at year end. We allow PL to be accumulated to 45 days, which is encashed only at the time of exit.
Now due to pandemic, all are in WFH setup, and no one is applying leave, so all PL are getting accumulated. We are asking managers to keep tab on employee discipline, but there is no easy answer.

It is for employee who has worked for a longer period in a company and at a stage they wants to take short break to pursue his passion, some special course or going on adventure trip. Normally it is after a tenure of more than 5 years in a company and employee has accumulated leave balance to his credit.

At the time of exploring job opportunities, leave entitlements are primarily discussed at junior level. However organization that boast of changing the game & those that talk about it win brownie points in attracting those who are seeking a good quality of balance of work & life.

Organization should document the leave policy and also at times have open forum / meeting to explain the purpose and application of leave else it will create the conflict at times and defeat the objective of policy.

Why would encouraging employees to take periodical off from work help organizations increase workforce efficiency?

It is important for both the organization as well as for the employee.
For the organization, it helps provide an opportunity of the next in line to step in & hold the fort thereby building a succession pipeline. It also helps a new person who steps in to look at processes & deliverables from the different light.
In certain situations, it may also expose inappropriate practices that may come to the surface.
