Chocolate has a history that goes back about 4000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. While it was originally used as a drink for medicinal and ritual purposes, over the years chocolate has evolved from a bitter substance for drinking to a solid, sweetened candy that is made with milk.
In 1828, Coenraad Johannes Van Houten, a Dutch inventor and chemist, figured out a way to produce chocolate in a solid form instead of just a beverage. And after solid chocolate bars were made, the chocolate was eventually turned into all sorts of creative types of candies.
