Chocolate has a history that goes back about 4000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. While it was originally used as a drink for medicinal and ritual purposes, over the years chocolate has evolved from a bitter substance for drinking to a solid, sweetened candy that is made with milk.
In 1828, Coenraad Johannes Van Houten, a Dutch inventor and chemist, figured out a way to produce chocolate in a solid form instead of just a beverage. And after solid chocolate bars were made, the chocolate was eventually turned into all sorts of creative types of candies.
Truffles, rum balls, chocolate covered caramels, peanut butter balls, fruit filled candies and so many more. And National Chocolate Candy Day is the perfect time to try and enjoy them all!
