The “8 Wastes” concept comes from Lean manufacturing and highlights areas where inefficiency can occur in processes. The term “wastebasket” could be used metaphorically here to suggest areas where waste (in time, resources, or effort) can be “thrown away” or eliminated. Here’s a quick rundown of the 8 Wastes:
- Overproduction – Making more than what’s needed.
- Waiting – Idle time, like waiting for materials or information.
- Transport – Unnecessary movement of materials or products.
- Excess Inventory – Storing more than necessary.
- Motion – Unnecessary movement by people (e.g., walking or reaching).
- Defects – Errors or defects requiring rework.
- Overprocessing – Doing more work than required.
- Unused Talent – Not utilizing people’s skills fully.
