[30 Min Live Discussion with Expert] on ‘Enhancing Employee Benefits and Cultivating Work-Life Balance’; 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM, June 2nd, 2023

We in HR need to promote the concept that employee self-care has a business impact. Only when it is linked to business it will get well accepted. For e.g., if exhausted employees go for a million-dollar deal and lose it, who gets impacted? Employee or Company?

I think larger issues of balance need to be promoted. It is not “either-or”, it has to co-exist - tag line can be “Your Business Care for Your Self Care”. As a Company, we should provide a support structure that encourages employees to focus on self-care. Mandatory breaks, De-stressing exercises, and employee clubs can be good starting points

Sir, what role can technology play in promoting work-life balance?

Technology can contribute immensely as it has the power to bring speed, scalability, and reach at a nominal cost. Imagine a company that has 10,000 employees spread in tier 2,3 & 4 cities. Technology can massively have a reach for those employees and bring them on the common theme/agenda for work-life balance through the use of technology. Moreover, technology can also add in terms of measuring progress, analyzing the data related to work-life balance, and do necessary changes if required.

How can companies effectively communicate and educate employees about the available benefits and resources for work-life balance?

My mantra is that no matter how good your HR interventions are, unless they are communicated in the language understood by employees you will miss the impact. Unfortunately, we in HR devise new benefits and schemes but spend so little time strategizing and mastering our communication for them. As a result, it loses its sheen and is seen as a failure

Are there any industry best practices or trends in employee benefits that we should consider adopting to enhance work-life balance?

There are many but in my view no point in copying as each company is unique and should be tailored according to their needs. Also, it is a factor of affordability. Best practices may be expensive for startup/early growth companies. For e.g., I am not sure now but there was a time when Starbucks used to spend more money on employee health & insurance than they spend on their coffee beans (which is their main raw material by the way!). If we ask newly funded companies to adopt, it will not be possible.

In short, be creative and do not try to be a copycat in your best practices. Check with employees what they want, observe their needs, and action it accordingly.

How can companies evaluate the effectiveness of their employee benefits initiatives?

It is relatively easy.

Speak to your employees (formally as well as informally)
Analyze the reasons given at the time of exit interview
Reflect on the reasons candidates give when not joining your organization
