Personnel Files - Physical or Electronic?

Can we maintain the personnel files electronically and scrap the physical files? From the sustainability perspective, keeping physical files is too much papers. As an organization we wanted to reduce the papers as much as possible. Looking forward for the responses in line with the compliances.
